Deer Isle-Stonington chess players came home from last weekend’s Maine Scholastic Team Chess Championships with two firsts and two seconds, as well as top honors in the K-8 Novice division and a co-championship in the High School Reserve division.
On Saturday, March 9, Deer Isle-Stonington participated in the championships at the University of Maine. The turnout was the most ever, with DI-S contributing 55 chess players to the 277 players who competed in four sections at the championship level and a K-8 Novice section, as well as a High School Reserve section.
In the K-8 Novice, DI-S won top honors with a 10 point total. Dakota Emrick led the way with a perfect 4-0 day. Tommy Hutchinson was almost perfect with 3 wins and a draw, and Jacob Gell completed the scoring by adding 2 1/2 points. The top three scorers count as the team score at this level. Other Mariner participants were Maya Brown, Owen Staples, Annie Reynolds, Zach Billings, Nathan Thompson, Liam Bishop and Koby Nevells with everyone scoring at least one point (win) to help the team take first.
In the High School Reserve category, the top three also served as the team score. DI-S tied Van Buren for first with 10 points. Krisford Melanio was a perfect 4-0 while Nick Eaton and Nathan Davis both had 3-1 records to secure a first-place tie.
In the four Championship divisions, DI-S had two firsts and two seconds.

The K-3 Mariners finished second with a brand new team this year with the only veteran being Henry Penfold from the team that won the title the previous two years. Penfold led DI-S with three wins, while Brayden Martin was next with 2 1/2 and his sister McHenna had 2 points. Breakwater School of Portland was first. Other DI-S players were Thomas Thompson, Trace Brophy, Sean Morey, Macey Brown and Dexter Brown.
K-6
The K-6 DI-S team defended the title they have won four years running by the barest of margins—half a point!
Myles Brown made it happen as he picked up win number 3 where a loss would have given the Mariners second place. Top scorer for DI-S was undefeated Ben Penfold, while Rylee Eaton had a 3-1 record and Cole Stewart and Wyatt Eaton came through with 2 wins and a draw each to give the Mariners 14 points. Breakwater had 13.5!
Whew! Addie McDonald, Cam Stewart, Andrew Pappianne, Kaylee Morey, Ariel Larrabee, Colby Haskell, and Ross Stewart all contributed wins to the DI-S effort.
Of course, every win even after the top five scorers means points other teams don’t get so they are very important to the overall team successes.
K-8
The K-8 team followed suit with a down-to-the wire 1/2-point win against Orono Middle School by a 14-13.5 margin. Eight of theDI-S points were due to perfect 4-0 records by both Orly Vaughn and SooZin Cha. Other DI-S point getters with 2 points were Kinsey Bartlett, Tyson Rice and Avery Reynolds. Ennis Marshall had an upset win over one of the top junior high players to complete the scoring.
High School
The High School Mariners repeated last year’s state runner-up finish with a tie with Bangor behind Cape Elizabeth. DI-S won the second-place hardware by winning 14 matches against Bangor’s 13.
Hayden Ciomei led DI-S from board four with 3 1/2 points followed by Cameron Wendell with 3 at board one and Andy Turner with 3 at board three. Sam Grindle totaled 2 1/2 at board two and Connor Morey got 2 wins at board five. Grindle, Ciomei, and Morey along with Nathan Davis, Nick Eaton and Chelsea Brown completed their high school careers with four years of top notch chess which will be sorely missed in 2014!
