Quality Chess Publications Coming...2013

Quality Chess Blog
Here are some books to look forward to.

'We are a little disappointed by our printer. How dare they put anyone else in front of us in the queue? Well, easily it appears. But with Kotronias on the King’s Indian – Fianchetto Systems uploaded and the King’s Gambit being uploaded today, everything is well and we dare project a publication date for seven books. This includes Playing the Trompowsky – An Attacking Repertoire, as well as the Mongoose title Best Play by Alexander Shashin and the paperback versions of Calculation, Positional Play and Strategic Play.

Things can still go wrong, get delayed and so on. But at least there is something to look forward to.'

Frank Marshall-US Champion

More on Frank Marshall
There's no voice over narration, but there is some live footage of Marshall v. Torre that's taken from the movie "Chess Fever." Although Marshall and Carlos Torre did play in the Moscow 1925 International Chess Tournament, they are in fact acting during the footage here.

The video then covers Marshall's stunning victory at Cambridge Springs 1904, and concludes with highlights from one of Marshall's brilliancy prize games, this one against Levitsky at Breslau 1912.

Kasparov and the Machine(Movie)

Full Documentary Movie
Garry Kasparov is arguably the greatest chess player who has ever lived. In 1997 he played a chess match against IBM’s computer Deep Blue. Kasparov lost the match. This film shows the match and the events surrounding it from Kasparov’s perspective.

It delves into the psychological aspects of the game, paranoia surrounding it and suspicions that have arisen around IBM’s true tactics. It consists of interviews with Kasparov, his manager, chess experts, and members of the IBM Deep Blue team, as well as original footage of the match itself.

The good parts of the movie is that you have interviews with Kasparov and the IBM team. Kasparov is a charming guy. The IBM team are open and friendly. The movie shows both the bad and good sides of Kasparov, who displays dignity and his temper when he is being pushed around by IBM. The Deep Blue team are interesting, but the IBM company does not come off well.

They milk the match for all advertising they could get. The movie keeps touting that it was a victory of machine intelligence over Man, but the point I get from it is, several computer geeks and chess grand masters after years of effort can put together a program that can barely beat a world champion, if they take every single psychological and technical advantage they can.

Australian Juniors Chess 2013

A nice video record.

Chess in Marostica- Italy(Video)

Human Chess Game
A CIMBA MBA student experienced this amazing event (called the 'scacchi' in italian) that occurs every two years in Marostica, Italy, which is about 50 kilometers from Paderno del Grappa.

Starting in the 1500s, this chess tournament began as a friendly duel between two princes to win the heart of the Lord's daughter.

With real horses and people playing in the game, it is no wonder that the event is still going on today. It is celebrated just as it was back then and brings people from all of the world to gather and enjoy this momentous event. If you are going to CIMBA in the year 2014, you will not want to miss this opportunity!

Chess in Armenian Schools(Video)

Chess in Schools-Armenian Style
Armenia is a country facing many problems. Its ceasefire with neighboring Azerbaijan is rocky, and its economy is struggling. Now Armenia is hoping chess could help improve its fortunes. Armenian schools are introducing chess as a compulsory subject.

The idea comes from chess Grandmaster Smbat Lputian, who founded a chess academy in Yerevan. The game is said to hone analytical skills and improve memory and concentration. Lputian says that could help children in other subjects too. And he's convinced that a country of chess players is capable of many achievements.

Opening Preparation-How to:GM Smirnov(Video)

Some Practice Advice-GM Igor Smirnov
Today, it is extremely important to be well prepared for a tournament game. Computers make opening preparation an extremely powerful weapon. That's why professional players usually spend from 2 to 6 hours on their pre-game preparation.

If you will not be able to neutralize your opponent's preparation, you will probably be in huge trouble.

About Manila
'It seems that almost every day a new skyscraper is sprouting up. With its population of nearly 12 million, Manila is among the top 10 largest cities in the world, along with Shenzhen and Istanbul. It is one of the fastest growing metropolis on the planet, with ultra-modern business centres springing up on every street corner.

"Manila's skyline is varied, it's a multifaceted skyline. Manila is a metropolis, which originates at the place where the Pasig river goes into Manila bay. That's where you have the old city. Manila grew from there. It's a radiant city," says architect Dominic Galicia.

A growing number of people are moving to the capital from rural areas to try their luck. This colourful and bustling city has a very young population - the average age is 23.

A new generation of creative minds is leaving its mark on the cityscape. Among them is fashion designer Oliver Tolentino. He is always on the move but returns frequently to Manila, seeking fresh inspiration. He is a strong believer in eco-couture: the materials he uses, such as pineapple fiber and water-lily leaves, all come from the Philippines.'-
