HAMMOND | The 44th annual Scholastic Team Chess Championships were held at Honey Creek Middle School in Terre Haute recently, where three repeat champions and one new champion were crowned in four grade-level divisions. More than 640 scholastic chess players competed in teams of four (plus alternates).
Eighty-seven teams in the Sixth Grade and Under competed at five regionals for an opportunity to be selected as one of the 34 teams to advance to the state finals. Edison and Morton elementary schools of Hammond both qualified two chess teams at the Hammond Regional.
The Hammond Regional was the largest in the state, with 11 teams advancing to state.
At the state finals, Edison earned the eighth-place team trophy for a second straight year. The team's top player, Xavier Cervantes, finished with a nearly perfect record of 4.5 points out of a possible 5. Other members of the team were Quinn Flanagan, Josue Moreno, Analisa Sada and Camille Spitler.
Morton elementary's Board 4 player, Danny Garza, led his team with 4 points and, along with team members Eric Crozier, Donovan SantaMaria and Donye Anderson, captured the 10th-place team trophy.
